Jellyfish are aquatic, free swimming soft bodied creatures that rely on the ocean’s current to help them travel and find food. Considered a plankton and not actually a fish, Jellyfish are usually referred to as Jellies. Jellies can travel in large groups called ‘blooms’ or ‘smacks.’

The lifespan and size of a Jellyfish depends on the species, but most small Jellies tend to live only a few hours. Other larger Jellies can live anywhere from a month or so to almost a year. In size, Jellies range from a couple millimeters to nearly eight feet in bell size, not including their tentacles. The largest known Jellyfish is the Lion’s Mane Jellyfish, with an 8-foot bell diameter, and tentacles that can reach up to 100 feet long. The smallest known Jellyfish is the Irukandji Jellyfish, with an adult size of one cubic centimeter.

Jellyfish tentacles are oftentimes presumed to be deadly, with the ability to sting and poison prey. However, not all species of jellyfish are poisonous, with some species being safe enough to swim with. The majority of Jellies that do have stinging tentacles aren’t deadly to humans, but there are a few that can cause death when stung.

You can have a tiny Jellyfish of your own with our new Jellyfish Geocoin! This cute little Jelly has six colorful tentacles, but don't worry, these little guys won't sting you. Add a Jellyfish Geocoin to your collection today!
