American Mustang Geocoin - antique bronze

This coin honors the American Mustang horse. Rugged, quick, free-roaming, and independent, mustangs have been recognized by the US Congress as “living symbols of the historic and pioneer spirit of the West…..” These feral horses are descendants of the horses originally brought to the Americas by the Spanish. Later, horses that belonged to explorers, settlers, and traders escaped and became part of the mustang herds. Today, mustangs come in all sizes, colors, and types of build.

A recent PBS Nature film documented the life of Cloud, a mustang stallion in the mountains of Montana. You can still see free roaming horses across the country including the Outer Banks of North Carolina, and in 10 western states.

The front of the coin shows a mustang rearing, striking his way free of the rim surrounding him. The back shows him running free across the open lands. We hope this geocoin will be free-roaming, moving from cache to cache just like the free Mustang horses!
